Linux on iPhone/iPod Touch

I'm pleased to announce that the Linux 2.6 kernel has been ported to Apple's iPhone platform, with support for the first and second generation iPhones as well as the first generation iPod touch. This is a rough first draft of the port, and many drivers are still missing, but it's enough that a real alternative operating system is running on the iPhone.

iPhone Linux Demonstration Video from planetbeing on Vimeo.

What we have:

- Framebuffer driver
- Serial driver
- Serial over USB driver
- Interrupts, MMU, clock, etc.

What we have in openiboot (but hasn't been ported yet):

- Read-only support for the NAND

What we don't have (yet!):

- Write support for the NAND
- Wireless networking
- Touchscreen
- Sound
- Accelerometer
- Baseband support

The current userland we're using, in the interest of expedience, is a Busybox installation created with buildroot, but glibc works fine as well, and we're going to build a more permanent userland solution.

A demonstration video can be seen here: http://www.vimeo.com/2373142

Instructions here: http://www.iphone-dev.org/planetbeing/LINUX-README.txt

Download here: http://91.186.26.18/iphone/files/iphonelinux-demo.tar.gz (look for mirrors in the comments)

EDIT: The instructions are missing the step that you have to select openiboot console from the menu before performing the "sudo ./oibc" step. Just be aware you have to do that if it seems like you're not getting a response from the oibc client.

FingerRun

news from installerapps.com

Version 0.1b

This is a treadmill, for your fingers! Currently in BETA!
Humorous toy for your iPhone and iPod Touch. This will count how far your ‘fingers’ have traveled.

iPhone 3G Jailbreak Released

The step by step Jailbreak Guide is now here.

Click HERE for the windows version.

There has been an update to the Pwnage Tool.

PwnageTool 2.0.1

Well, the response was overwhelming. :) The downloads brought down several of our servers, and some of them have yet to recover!

It seems that some people have been having problems with our initial release, so we have PwnageTool 2.0.1 for you. It addresses the following issues:

* It auto-finds the bl39 and bl46 files better, if they’re on your computer
* It creates the ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support/ folder if not present, which should help with some 1600 errors people have been having.
* Many people have reported the PwnageTool not starting up at all (the icon never stops bouncing). This issue should be resolved now.
* The Sparkle AppCast URL is fixed in this version, so automatic updates should work for future releases.

Because of the AppCast URL fix, we recommend that everyone who downloaded PwnageTool 2.0 get this version, if they want to stay up to date automatically.

N.B: if PwnageTool 2.0 pwned your phone correctly the first time, you do not need to pwn again with 2.0.1.

You can download this update here, or here.

If you download it from other mirrors, make sure to verify the SHA1 of the file is 10b6c7dc22286e7b70c3d5a92cda7d117426fda9.

Here is a quick note from the ‘iPhone Dev Team’

We’ll be releasing a more official announcement soon, but we wanted to get the tool out there. We sincerely hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed making it :)

Update 1: Just to clear up some confusion over what this actually does: yes, it jailbreaks and unlocks older iPhones, and jailbreaks iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touches. We only support the 2.0 firmwares.

Update 2: It looks like there aren’t enough TCP ports on that server, so _BigBoss_ has generously offered to mirror it.

Update 3: If you get Error 1600 from iTunes (or if you see in your log a failure to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw), try: mkdir “~/Library/iTunes/Device Support” ; if that directory already exists, remove any files in it. Then re-run PwnageTool.

Click here or here or here or here to download the Pwnage Tool 2.0.

Note - There is no love for windows users at this time.

You can click here to subscribe. . .I will be posting as soon as the Windows version is available.

Installer vs Cydia

Taken from here: installerapps.com

I had Cyndia installed some time ago, but i deleted it. Now full story.

When the iPodTouch was first hacked there was a tiny program installed that would let you install other 3rd party applications. This tiny program was known as Installer(or Installer.app) and became the standard for putting those applications on your iPhone or iPod Touch. A few months later an application called Cydia started surfacing. This application boasted that it did what Installer did. . .but better.

It’s really just semantics. . .they both deliver 3rd party applications to your iPhone and iPod Touch. . .and they both work. For most end users. . .that’s all they care about. For the rest, here is a brief explanation.
How Installer Works

Installer uses XML files(RSS) to syndicate those 3rd party applications to your device. Much like an RSS feed delivers blog posts and podcasts. . .it essentially does the same thing on your iPhone. . .Except it’s bringing applications to you(instead of podcasts).
How Cydia Works

Cydia uses the same system that you see on some linux distributions(like Ubuntu). . .APT. This means that Cydia uses dependencies(which makes it better for the developer since there will be less bandwidth).
Differences

The biggest difference is that Cydia is open source and even though Installer /might/ become open source later. . .it isn’t just yet.Cydia uses dependencies so you don’t need to install those runtime packages(like Jiggy) that you see in Installer. It’s the same with the BSD Subsystems package as well.
Conclusion

I am glad there is an alternative to Installer. . .in case for some reason someone decides they don’t like it or want to use it anymore. My biggest issue here is the redundant work being done. With the App Store available as an official replacement to Installer/Cydia it doesn’t make sense to split things up like this. Developers are being forced to managed two repository sources if they want to maximize their audience(sort of like game developers putting their game on multiple consoles).

I just think our progress would be much further if we worked together instead of separately.

iScores updated to 1.5

In this update to iScores(LiveScore) they changed a lot. Not only do they have a new icon. . .they also have little images for each sport. They added an options area to include some misc. features. Finally, in this update they allow you to pick specific countries to synchronize(instead of forcing you to do all of them).

Palm OS apps make their way to the iPhone

SplashID, SplashShopper and SplashMoney, collectively a series of popular Palm OS applications, are making their way to the iPhone’s AppStore.

SplashID

SplashID is a popular secure password manager that is currently available on a large number of handheld devices. Retail pricing for the application has been set at $30; if such pricing carries over to the iPhone, SplashID will be one of the most expensive titles yet-announced for the AppStore.

According to Splashdata’s blog: “SplashID for iPhone is about ready to launch, and we wanted to give you a sneak peek. It’s definitely the best looking version of SplashID we’ve ever created, and it works really smoothly and quickly. A bunch of you have asked why we have had to wait so long, and the answer is we’re waiting for Apple to launch its App Store so that we can make SplashID and other applications available. As many of you know, the only way to distribute official apps for the iPhone will be through Apple’s own App Store.”

A full feature list is available.

SplashShopper

SplashShopper is a list manager that is also available on a large number of handheld devices. It’s also listed at $30, though iPhone-specific pricing hasn’t been announced. You can find a complete feature list for the currently selling versions here.

SplashMoney

plashMoney

SplashMoney is a personal finance manager made popular on the Palm OS that offers two way syncing between the desktop and hand-held devices Online banking transactions can be downloaded to either desktop or hand held. It allows for budgeting and chart creation. You can schedule transactions, reminders, etc.

Like the other Splash Apps, SplashMoney is priced at $30.

UPDATE: We’ve received a note from SplashData regarding pricing for SplashMoney:

“It’s not official yet, but we are leaning toward charging $9.95 for the
handheld client (which will be sold through the App Store)”

A complete feature list for the currently selling versions is available.

Wallpapper - decorate your IPod Touch Share your desktop picture

Developer’s description of app: See what everyone has as their wallpaper.

Dude this app is SWEET!! When you first open the app is gives you a little warning that your wallpaper is about to be shared with everyone. If you decide to continue, a copy of whatever your wallpaper is when you tap continue is put into a pool with everyone else’s. This is where is gets really cool, it then scrolls through everyone else’s wallpaper showing a new one every 5 seconds or so. But, it gets even cooler (if that is a word)…if you see a really sweet wallpaper that you want to put as your wallpaper, just tap on the image and select “use as wallpaper” and it sets it as your wallpaper! However, it does replace your current wallpaper so if your wallpaper is a picture you took that is no longer in your photos make sure you really want to replace it. There are a few things I can think of that would make this app even better…the ability to scroll though the wallpaper yourself so you don’t have to wait and the ability to save the wallpapers to your phone. Other than that, it is pretty cool to see everyone’s wallpaper! There are some really sweet ones! Here are some screenshots:

Jiggy Runtime

http://jiggyapp.com/

It is Framework. Some of the applications requires this.

Simply put, Jiggy is the easiest way to create applications for the iPhone (or iPod Touch). With just Jiggy and a browser, you'll be able to write an awesome iPhone application in a matter of minutes. JiggyApps run natively on the iPhone, so there is no messing around with HTML and the limitations of Mobile Safari. At the same time, you don't need a compiler or even a Mac, because JiggyApps are written in JavaScript.
from original website.

Tetris!

Tetris! is tetris, it tells everything. You can get it from the newATTiPhone.com source. It requires Jiggy Runtime in order to actually play it so, make sure you install that first! When you open up the game for the first time it will ask you for your name. The game requires a name because Tetris! has a high score table. On the actual game screen you will notice the buttons “pause” and “hold piece”. Tetris! uses the capabilities of the Iphone/Ipod. You use finger swipes to play the game. Swiping your finger upward will rotate the piece, swiping left will make the piece go left, swiping right will make it go right, and swiping down will make it go down…pretty self explanatory. I had no problems with the swipes, it recognized every single swipe I made. You get bonuses for clearing more than one line. If you clear four or more you get “Tetris!” which just gives you even more points. Once the blocks reache the top of the screen you lose. You have the choice to submit your score or to play again. Tetris! is exactly like the original tetris that everyone loves, but this has finger swipes and a high score table, which makes it ten times better. If you are a fan of tetris then this is an easy choice.

HuaRongDao Block Puzle Chinese motif

HuaRongDao is available in the Installer.app through the Ste Packaging or the Soneso Sources (http://soneso.com/iphone). Well actually, you have seen it before. It is just the game BlockPuzzle with a new look. So, if you like BlockPuzzle you might want to check out HuaRongDao to see if you would rather play it with it’s new Chinese motif! Turn Your iPod Touch into an iPhone

From lifeHacker.

The iPhone and iPod touch are almost indistinguishable devices except for one major difference—you can make calls from your iPhone, and you can't from your iPod touch. For the privilege of making phone calls with your iPhone, you have to pay $100 more upfront to Apple for the device itself, plus a minimum of $60/month to AT&T for the next two years. Let's say you didn't need that kind of firepower from your iPod touch, but that you would like to use it make a phone call every now and then. You can, and today I'm going to show you how to make VoIP phone calls from your iPod touch or iPhone using a freeware application called SIP-VoIP.
What You'll Need

1 .) A jailbroken iPod touch or iPhone. If you haven't already jailbroken your device, don't worry—it'll just take 45 seconds.

2.) iPhone headphones with mics don't work with the iPod touch, so if you're using an iPod touch you'll need a Touchmod mic. The Touchmod mics come in a variety of flavors, from the simple dongle that plugs into the syncing port to the headphone-and-mic combo that works much like the iPhone headphones. The hardware will set you back somewhere between $50 and $60.

3.) The freeware SIP-VoIP application. Read on for details for installing SIP-VoIP below.

UPDATE: It looks like another VoIP app for the iPhone has emerged called Fring. Fring promises to work with both Skype and SIP accounts, but like SIP-VoIP it's still young and not entirely perfect. I haven't tried it yet, but it might be a viable alternative to SIP-VoIP, and can be installed just as easily.
Install SIP-VoIP
Assuming you've got the hardware you need and you've prepared your device, now it's time to install the VoIP application. If you don't yet have a mic, you can test that SIP-VoIP is successfully making calls before you purchase it.

I'm going to cover two different ways of installing SIP-VoIP. The first and easiest method is with Installer.app, the program that is automatically installed when you jailbreak your iPod. The second method is more difficult, but it's good to have around in case you run into errors (which I did).

Method 1 - Install SIP-VoIP with Installer.app:

First, since SIP-VoIP isn't found in Installer.app by default, you need to add the Touchmods repository to Installer. To do so, launch Installer and head to the Sources tab. Now tap Edit -> Add, and type http://touchmods.net/rep.xml into the Add Source dialog. Hit OK, and Installer will refresh your sources, this time including your new Touchmods repository.

Now go to the Install tab and find the entry labeled Touchmods. Inside you'll see an app called Touchmods SIP-VoIP. Go ahead and install SIP-VoIP by tapping the entry, tapping the install button, and then verifying that you want to install this application from an "untrusted" source.

This is by far the easiest method for installing SIP-VoIP, but I had trouble with the latest version of SIP-VoIP (version 1.2) on my iPod touch, so I had to install a previous version (1.1). Since you can only install the latest with Installer, I'll also demonstrate how to install older versions of SIP-VoIP. I'd recommend trying it the easy way first, then moving to the following method if you have trouble. If you're taking the easy route the first time around, skip to the Set Up an SIP Account section below.

Method 2 - Install SIP-VoIP over SSH:

To install previous versions of SIP-VoIP, you'll need to first install OpenSSH through Installer.app (you can find it under Install -> System). Now you'll need to connect to your iPod using a desktop FTP client that supports SFTP connections (using Winscp). This will allow you to browse and copy files to your iPod like you would if you could access the disk as an external hard drive on your computer.

To connect to your device from your computer, you'll need to know your iPod touch's or iPhone's IP address. You can find this by opening the Settings app, tapping Wi-Fi, and then tapping the blue arrow next to the network you're connected to.

BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213291660814144034

Now that you've got that, start up your FTP client of choice, enter the IP address as you server, and use root for your username and alpine as your password. Once connected, navigate to the Applications folder (just above the root folder). That's where your iPhone and iPod touch keep all of their applications. From here it's a simple matter of dragging and dropping the appropriate SIP-VoIP app to the applications folder.

I'm using the 1.1 version of SIP-VoIP, which you can download here. Once downloaded, unzip the file and then drag and drop the SIP-VoIP.app file to your Applications folder. Finally, restart your iPod or iPhone and the new app should show up on your home screen.

Set Up an SIP Account

Unfortunately the SIP-VoIP app doesn't work with the most popular VoIP app Skype (it uses the SIP protocol), which means you'll have to set up an account with another service to use the app. Luckily there are tons of options out there that can work with SIP-VoIP. I used a service called FreeCall, so that's what I'll highlight in my examples, but the Touchmods blog lists a handful of alternatives.

If you want to follow along exactly with my settings, head to the FreeCall signup page and register for an account. After you register, you'll need to buy some minutes for your call time. FreeCall is an international service, so when it asks for your cell phone (to which it sends an SMS confirmation), you'll need to include your country code; for example, it would look something like 0015555551234 if you're in the US. The minimum purchase with FreeCall is 10 euros, which amounts to around $16. Once you've purchased some calling time with FreeCall, it's time to enter your setup configuration in SIP-VoIP and start making calls.

Set Up SIP-VoIP to Make Calls

Finally, we're ready to set up SIP-VoIP with the SIP provider you registered with above. Launch the app from your iPod touch or iPhone's home screen, then tap on Settings in the bottom right corner. You'll see a very rudimentary form where you'll enter the settings for the SIP account you set up above.

If you used FreeCall, enter your FreeCall username and password in the first two fields (other services will use the number they've assigned you as the username), then sip.voiparound.com in the field labeled SIP-Server. There are more fields, but for FreeCall that should be all you need. Hit Save to save your settings—you may have to hit return on the iPod's keyboard to dismiss it and see the Save button—and then tap the dial tab to head to the dialpad.

Before you make your first call, you have to connect the application to the SIP server, so click the button labeled "connect to sip server" in the lower left. If all goes well, it'll connect without a hitch. (This is where I ran into some problems with version 1.2 on the iPod touch. 1.2 connected without issue from my iPhone, but I kept getting connection error messages with 1.2 on my iPod touch. If you're having similar problems, installing version 1.1 may help.) If it connected successfully, all you've got to do is dial your number (country code included, depending on which service you go with) and hit the call button.

I actually stumbled onto a video on YouTube of a precocious kid using a Touchmods mic with SIP-VoIP and FreeCall. There are several of these videos on YouTube—I particularly like this speaker phone setup. Check out his video below to get a better look at what the final result is.

Set up Inbound number
Your FreeCall account only handles outbound calls, but you're not out of luck if you want to add inbound functionality to your iPod touch. You can register your FreeCall SIP account with other services, like IPKall, to get a free phone number that will ring your iPod touch. (The only catch is that you're limited to a state of Washington area code). I won't go into details on setting up an inbound number, but you can find more details from this post at the Touchmods blog.

The SIP-VoIP app has been in development for a while, and though it's still not much to look at, it seems to be improving over time. The iPhone and iPod touch 2.0 firmware will officially hit the streets sometime in June with support for third party apps through Apple, so who knows what kind of VoIP apps we'll see when that time comes.

Whether or not we'll ever see Skype or another VoIP app officially supported for the iPhone (Apple says they'll allow VoIP over Wi-Fi), SIP-VoIP is already there. My experience with it has been hit-or-miss, and it's got miles to go before it's the friendliest app around, but whether you'd like to make international calls for cheap or you just want to want to reach out and touch someone from your iPod touch, the folks at Touchmods and SIP-VoIP are already providing the tools to do just that.

Come Back EDGE, *ALL* Is Forgiven!

from Just Another iPhone Blog by patrick
Copyright © 2008 patrick. Visit the original article at http://justanotheriphoneblog.com/wordpress/2008/06/07/come-back-edge-all-is-forgiven/.

OK, I’ll admit - I have never been a big supporter of Edge. I’ve blabbed away plenty over recent months about looking forward to a 3G iPhone - to how much faster, better, cooler that would be, with never a thought for any redeeming value in the current Edge data capability on the iPhone.

Well … for the last several days, EDGE data has left the building - so to speak - on my iPhone, and I’ve been missing it. Missing it *severely*.

I’ve been seeing the dreaded error shown in the above screencap: "Could not activate EDGE. You are not subscribed to EDGE." Once you see this error, there is no data connection in any of the iPHone’s applications if you are not connected to WiFi.

Just Data Probs, Voice is Fine …

For me, this issue has had no impact on phone / voice usage. I have been making and receiving calls, using visual voicemail, and generally having no phone troubles.

But … my iPhone as web device is just about dead in the water. Away from WiFi, no email, no web browsing, no Weather updates, no data connectivity.

Get Some Help?

I’ve done all the most frequently recommended steps to resolution of this issue, per Apple Discussion and other help forums - i.e. I have used the Settings Applet to Reset both all network settings, and *all* settings on the phone. No change. I’ve restored the iPhone via iTunes, and set it up as a new partnership with iTunes (i.e. choosing not to allow it to restore back any previous settings that might carry some vestiges of the issue) - still no change. Did further restores of all settings after the full restore, and still no difference.

I have not yet called AT&T or Apple on this issue - as I have a bad, pessimistic feeling about it having read through lots of forum threads where folks have been passed back and forth between AT&T and Apple to no avail on this issue, or have been advised to do exactly the things I’ve already done.

Blame Jailbreak???

As many of you know, my iPhone has been jailbroken for a lot of months now, and it’s always possible that is part of the reason for having this trouble now.

I don’t feel this is highly likely though - as I’ve seen plenty of people out there on forums seeing exactly the same sort of issue with completely stock phones. Also, of course, restoring the phone back to stock during troubleshooting has not made one bit of difference for me so far.

Miss You, Edge …

Oh well, the main thing is … I have come to have a deep longing for, and newfound respect for, that lovely Edge data package that just won’t come out to play for me lately.

So yes - 3G is very cool, and I’m still very keen to see it - but no more running down and talking down Edge for me - just come back Edge, all is definitely forgiven …

Release of 2.0 firmware! Attention!!!

One company is releasing a Lego game for the iPhone and iPod Touch called Lego Touch.

You will be able to build you own Lego creations and then either email them or SMS them to your friends or share them on the Lego Share website.

The Lego Touch app will also feature a variety of Lego games which can be downloaded, and you can even challenge your friends to a build off.

I have to admit this looks like a really cool iPhone app, and I can’t wait till this comes out.

iPhone/iPodTouch + Mac OS X 10.5.3 = Sync with Google Contacts

Copyright © 2008 patrick. Visit the original article at http://justanotheriphoneblog.com/wordpress/2008/05/28/iphone-plus-mac-os-x-1053-sync-with-google-contacts/.

iPHone sync with Google Contacts

We’re happy to tell you that starting today, it’s easier to sync up your contact lists. The Address Book application in Mac OS X 10.5.3 now lets iPhone users sync their Address Book with Google Contacts. To try it, go to the Address Book menu, choose Preferences, and then check Synchronize with Google. It’ll ask for your Google account and password, then automatically update your contacts every time you sync your iPhone. - Mike Morton, Google Mac Blog

Pretty cool new feature with the Mac OS X update today to 10.5.3 - your Address Book can now be set to sync to Google Contacts.

It syncs each time you sync your iPhone (not sure why this is the setup). Just tried this out quickly and it seems to work OK, which is very nice because I’ve never worked up the motivation to get most of my contacts into Google Contacts.

Anyone else given this a try yet?

Zinio has released an optimized iPhone magazine reader which allows you to view full popular magazines for free.

And hurry up - this might not last long.

We heard about Zinio releasing an iPhone version of it's super-popular online magazine reader, so we decided to do a little investigation.

On their regular website Zinio.com offers a single issue for $4.99 - and allows you to preview the first 20 pages (which are 75% ads anyway)

If you don't own an iPhone but want to view these magazines anyway:

Simply change your user agent to iPhone on your Safari browser by following these super simple instructions.

Or

Do the same on your Mozilla Firefox browser by following these quick and easy instructions.

It's worth it.

Kingdom Lores public access

Marco Giorgini published alpha version 0.0.62 RPG/Fantasy 3d game Kingdom Lores.
It is initial version drop, but it is amazing and gives an idea what exact power do you have in hand. It is clearly seen bright future of IPod/IPhone game consoles.

Download the game from BigBoss’s repository.
Or get it directly from developer. http://www.marcogiorgini.com/iPhone/plist.xml

And remember it is just alpha version.

Excuses generator

Excuses generator is fun stuff to generate text. It is quite useful, if you have no idea in head, standing in front of Police officer or School Director.
